In the 14th century, a Jewish presence was identified. Nice then belonged to Provence. Jews were forced to wear a distinctive sign. By 1406, the Jewish community had official status. The city belonged to Savoy again. They had a cemetery near Lympia harbor by that time. A synagogue was erected twenty years later. The Duke of Savoy protected Jews from forced conversions. However, he still imposed housing and profession restrictions.
