What if I told you that this very hill beneath our feet was once a Viking lookout? Welcome to Cronk ny Arrey Laa. Its name whispers tales of vigilance. Cronk ny Arrey Laa means Hill of the Day Watch. This is due to its history as a lookout post during Viking invasions. But that’s not all that makes this place special.

Cronk ny Arrey Laa has another name. Locals call it Cronk ny Irree-Laa. This translates to hill of the rising day or dawn. Imagine herring fishers of old. They watched from the coast. They waited for the sun to crest this hill. It signaled them to cast their nets.

Now, consider the cross standing proudly here. It is not ancient. It was erected around 1979 to celebrate the Manx Millennium. This marked 1,000 years of Tynwald. Tynwald is the Manx parliament. It is said to be the oldest continuous parliament in the world. The cross is not just a marker of time. It blends Manx Celtic and Norse designs. These designs show the merging of cultures.

Notice the inscription at the base of the cross. These are words from “The Manx Fisherman’s Evening Hymn”. William Henry Gill wrote them. He also composed the Manx National Anthem. The inscription reads: “Like them of old, in vain we toil all night, Unless with us Thou go, Who art the Light; Come then, O Lord, that we may see Thy face.”

Think about those words. They speak of reliance on something greater. They echo the hopes of fishermen facing the unpredictable sea. The full hymn is a plea. It asks for guidance and sustenance. It acknowledges the power of the sea. It recognizes the dependence on the land.

Moreover, Cronk ny Arrey Laa is the second highest hill in this region. It reaches 437 meters. Only South Barrule is taller. This summit offers spectacular views. It is said that one can see the six kingdoms from here. These include Mann, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Heaven. Some even add a seventh kingdom: Neptune, the sea.

Feel the steep western slope. It plunges directly into the sea. It forms a dramatic cliff. Trail Magazine calls this area wild. Manx National Heritage deems it spectacular. The Raad ny Foillan, a long-distance path, crosses the summit.

Long ago, this was a site of Christian pilgrimage. People visited Chibbyr ny Vashtey. This is known as The Well of Baptism. They also visited the ruins of a Keeill at Lag ny Keeilley. This remained a burial ground until around 1800.

Take a moment to breathe in the air. Consider the layers of history beneath your feet. Cronk ny Arrey Laa is more than just a hill. It’s a vantage point. It’s a monument. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Isle of Man. As we leave this spot, carry with you the echoes of Vikings. Remember the prayers of fishermen and the stories etched in stone.
