In 1865, George Dancer held prayer services in the neighborhood known as Brucetown. Several souls were saved and baptized, leading to the formation of the Evergreen Baptist Mission under the umbrella of Pleasant Green Baptist Church. The mission thrived and, in 1869, it became self-sustaining, eventually becoming the New Evergreen Baptist Church, which remains a pillar of faith in Houston. Standing before this grand structure with its history etched in the heart of the city, you feel a sense of reverence, almost as if you are stepping back in time. The story of this church is captivating, a testament to perseverance and the power of faith. The church battled challenges, including the loss of its first building to fire, but the congregation never faltered. There was always the desire to rebuild and grow. Over the years, they erected brick structures and purchased a parsonage, with many souls being added to the fold under the leadership of pastors like Rev. Tolley and Rev. Smith. Today, New Evergreen Baptist Church still stands tall, a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of faith.
