Towering above the lush greenery of Milan’s public gardens, stands a marble monument dedicated to Ernesto Teodoro Moneta. It’s a striking tribute to a man whose life embodies a fascinating blend of revolutionary spirit and unwavering commitment to peace. The monument, sculpted by Tullio Brianzi in 1920, pays homage to Moneta’s multifaceted career as a journalist, nationalist, and revolutionary soldier. It stands as a testament to the man’s unwavering peace activism. Moneta’s early life was marked by his involvement in the 1848 uprising against Austrian rule in Milan. Later, he joined Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand, fighting for Italian unification. Yet, it’s the latter part of his life, when Moneta became a pacifist that truly fascinates. He dedicated himself to promoting peace and founded the Lombard Association for Peace and Arbitration, a movement dedicated to disarmament and the creation of a League of Nations. This dedication earned him, with Louis Renault, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1907. The monument, initially gifted to the Society for Peace and International Justice, found its permanent place in the public gardens in 1924. Sadly, it was removed during the tumultuous period of 1937 due to the society’s dissolution. But, after the Second World War, with the society’s re-establishment, the monument was returned to its rightful place. It stands as a reminder of Moneta’s powerful message and his commitment to promoting peace, a message that resonated beyond the borders of Italy, influencing the motto of the European Union, “In varietate unitas!”. As you gaze at the monument, take a moment to appreciate the profound impact this man had on the world, a reminder that even in the face of conflict, there is always hope for peace.
