Tremble like green sticks they said. Did you know that’s how people described the Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II? This incredible suspension bridge once gracefully spanned the Douro River connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

Imagine the scene in 1843. The Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II officially opened. It wasn’t a grand ceremony. A massive flood forced the dismantling of the old Ponte das Barcas. The new bridge was urgently needed. It became a lifeline. This elegant structure was a marvel of engineering. It boasted 18-meter-high stone pillars. These elegant obelisks formed the impressive gateway to the bridge. The bridge was 170.14 meters long and 6 meters wide. Eight strong iron cables held it up. It carried the weight of carts horses and people across the Douro.

The French company Claranges Lucotte & Cie built the Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II. Stanislas Bigot designed the impressive bridge. He worked with Portuguese engineers like José Vitorino Damásio. Materials came from all over Europe. Cast iron from England. Wrought iron from Norway. Heavy iron parts from France and England. The wires for the cables came from Besançon. The pine wood for the deck was from Stockholm. They built it without a single accident. This fact is amazing isn’t it? Such precision and craftsmanship.

Despite its initial success the Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II only lasted 44 years. It was said to tremble like green sticks. This instability led to its closure and eventual dismantling in 1887. The Ponte Luís I replaced it. Today only the two magnificent pillars remain. They stand as silent witnesses to this impressive feat of 19th-century engineering. They are a testament to the ambition and ingenuity of the time. They are a poignant reminder of a bridge that once connected two cities. Now they are a reminder of a bridge that is gone but not forgotten. The Ponte Pênsil Dona Maria II may be gone but its story lives on. Its legacy is etched into the very fabric of Porto.
