What inspired the creation of a 12-foot-tall, interactive sculpture in the heart of New York City? Let’s unravel the captivating story of the Beacon Sculpture. The Beacon Sculpture stands as a testament to Lewis H. Latimer, a remarkable inventor and electrical engineer. His contributions significantly improved the lives of everyday Americans. The sculpture’s design draws inspiration from Latimer’s 1881 patent drawing for the electric lamp and his 1882 patent for the carbon filament in the incandescent bulb.

The Beacon Sculpture isn’t just a static piece of art. It pulsates with light, responding to the presence and interaction of those around it. This interactive element embodies the very essence of Latimer’s innovative spirit. It symbolizes the “light within us,” acknowledging the power and radiance of every individual. The sculpture’s creation was a collaborative effort. Artist Shervone Neckles partnered with Beam Center and its Fellows to bring this vision to life between 2020 and 2021. Neckles aimed to create a more inclusive historical narrative, specifically within New York City. The Beacon Sculpture became a focal point for this endeavor, paying tribute to Latimer’s often-overlooked legacy.

The Beacon Sculpture’s location is deeply intertwined with Latimer’s life. Latimer and his wife, Mary Wilson Latimer, moved to New York from Massachusetts in 1880. They lived in midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and Flushing, Queens from 1880 to 1928. The sculpture was strategically placed in two of these boroughs. It was first displayed in Flushing, Queens, at the Lewis Latimer House Museum. This was where Latimer raised his family from 1902 until his death in 1928. Later, the Beacon Sculpture was exhibited in Downtown Brooklyn, near Latimer’s former Fort Greene rowhouse residence.

The Beacon Sculpture is more than just a tribute to a brilliant inventor. It is a beacon of truth, illuminating Latimer’s life and contributions. It invites us to reflect on the power of innovation and the importance of recognizing unsung heroes who have shaped our world. The sculpture stands as a symbol of inspiration. It reminds us that within each of us lies a unique light, waiting to be shared with the world.
