On the banks of the bamboo river, lies Sungai Buloh. It’s a town steeped in history, a blend of vibrant cultures and a testament to human resilience. Sungai Buloh, translated from Malay, literally means “bamboo river”. This town, a mukim and a parliamentary constituency, sits in the northern part of the Petaling region in Selangor, Malaysia. It’s located just 16 kilometers northwest of Kuala Lumpur and a mere 8 kilometers north of Subang Airport, along the Kuala Selangor highway. Sungai Buloh is more than just a location on a map. It holds a significant place in history, especially for its colonial-era leper colony. This colony was one of the largest in the country, a place where people from various backgrounds – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians, and even Turks – found themselves united by circumstance. Established in 1930 in the isolated valley of Bukit Lagong, the Sungai Buloh leper colony became a unique community. It was born from the 1926 Leper Enactment Act, which mandated the segregation and treatment of those afflicted with leprosy. At its peak, Sungai Buloh held the distinction of being the second largest leprosy settlement globally. It boasted advanced facilities and to this day remains a research center for leprosy. Sungai Buloh became a symbol of an “enlightened policy”, creating a self-supporting community for those with leprosy, modeled on the principles of a garden city. The colony even had its own dedicated currency, scrip, issued in 1935 and 1936. Sungai Buloh has also seen its share of tragedy. In May 1991, the Bright Sparklers Firework factory exploded, causing a devastating fire. More recently, in 2023, the Elmina plane crash claimed ten lives, including eight on board and two on the ground. A Learjet private plane, destined for Subang Airport, crashed onto a road leading into a housing project. Among the victims was Pahang assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun. Beyond its historical significance, Sungai Buloh is a town of neighborhoods. Areas like Bukit Rahman Putra, Damansara Damai, Bandar Sri Damansara, and Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh are just a few examples. Many of these are gated communities, prioritizing the safety and security of their residents. Sungai Buloh is a place where history and modern life intertwine, a town that whispers stories of resilience, community, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
