Established in 1995 the Islamic College of Brisbane opened its doors. It was a momentous occasion. This was the first Muslim school in Queensland. Imagine the excitement the anticipation the hope. The college was founded with the lowest tuition fees of any private school in Queensland at that time. This made education accessible to many families. It was a significant step for the Muslim community in Brisbane.

The college’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2015 a dispute arose between the college and the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils. This led to the dismissal of the principal Dr Mubarak Noor. The disagreement centered around a substantial financial withdrawal. The withdrawal was eventually reversed after objections. This incident highlighted the complexities of managing a faith-based institution. It also brought to light the importance of transparent financial practices.

Another incident involved a pig’s head being left outside the school with a swastika. This act of vandalism highlighted the rising Islamophobia and hate crimes in the country. The college responded strongly condemning the act and highlighting the need for tolerance and understanding. The event brought forth conversations about religious freedom. It also strengthened the community’s resolve. The school faced many other financial challenges and controversies. The Australian Government even put the school on notice for breaching the Education Act. This underscored the difficulties faced by the institution.

Despite these setbacks the Islamic College of Brisbane has persevered. It has grown significantly. Today the college boasts a large student population. It serves students from Prep to Year 12.
