Clutching the dusty pages of my grandfather’s journal, I found myself drawn to the enigmatic name “Aspropyrgos”. He had scrawled tales of soaring temperatures and a landscape dominated by a “white castle”. Now, here I am in Aspropyrgos, ready to uncover its secrets. Aspropyrgos is etched into the Thriasio Plain, a mere 15 kilometers northwest of Athens. It’s nestled between Mount Parnitha and the Aigaleo hills, a stone’s throw from the Elefsina Airbase and the shimmering Saronic Gulf. Aspropyrgos, meaning “white castle” or “tower” in Greek, hints at a history yet to be fully revealed. This town holds the distinction of recording some of the highest temperatures in Greece. Imagine a scorching 47.5°C in June 2007! The heat isn’t the only striking element of Aspropyrgos. A significant industrial zone hums with activity, a hub of warehouses, recycling plants, and logistics companies. The Aspropyrgos Refinery, a giant in the Greek oil industry, processes a staggering 135,000 barrels of oil per day. This industrial activity has unfortunately cast a shadow of pollution over the area. But there’s more to Aspropyrgos than industry. From the bustling Dimokratias Avenue to the quiet corners where ancient remnants whisper stories of the past, Aspropyrgos offers a unique blend of history, industry, and natural beauty. The population has boomed over the years, growing from just over 12,000 in 1981 to over 31,000 in 2021. My grandfather’s journal mentioned a railway line, and indeed, the Proastiakos trains still connect Aspropyrgos to Athens International Airport and Kiato. As I stand here, gazing at the blend of industrial structures against the backdrop of the hills, I can’t help but wonder what other stories Aspropyrgos holds.
