Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church started as Mt. Olive Baptist Church. A small group of believers gathered together. Years later, they built a new facility facing Mass. Ave. That’s when they changed the name to Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church. In 1923, the church purchased its current home at 146 Hampshire Street.
Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church is affiliated with American Baptist Churches USA. It is an evangelical ministry. This means the church believes in the Bible. They believe Jesus offers everlasting life. They believe God’s word sets people free from bondage. They also believe in the Holy Spirit’s present-day work.
The mission of Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church is clear. It is a place to know and worship God. They want to make Him known to others. The church offers a purpose for living. Reverend Brenda Ann Brown leads Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church. She received her calling as a teenager. She has been a member for over 30 years. In 2015, she became Senior Pastor.
Reverend Brown also directs the Project Manna Food Program. It brings her joy to feed those in need. She serves on several committees including The Boston Ministers in Action. She is also part of The Cambridge Black Pastors Alliance. Moreover, she acts as a member of the Scleroderma Foundation National Board. Her service extends to London. There, she empowers women leaders.
Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church’s covenant is a promise. Members receive Jesus as their savior. They are baptized. They enter into a covenant as one body in Christ.
