Five hundred and fifty square meters. That’s how much space the TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße offered when it first opened. It wasn’t much but it was a start. This wasn’t just any sports center. This was the new home for TU Berlin’s athletic programs.
The TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße stands here. It rose from the ashes of a former sports center. That one stood on Franklinstraße. It was demolished in 2006. The need for a new facility was urgent. The demand was simply too high. Temporary solutions were inadequate. The quality suffered. Students and faculty deserved better.
The first phase of the TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße opened in April 2008. Two new sports halls emerged. One hall dedicated to dance classes spanned 250 square meters. Another 300 square meters were devoted to equipment-free fitness training. That first opening day was a whirlwind. Thirteen hundred and fifty people signed up. Sixty-one dance and fitness classes were scheduled. Nearly three thousand people attended those classes weekly.
But the TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße wasn’t finished. A second phase of construction was planned. It concluded in 2010. Two more halls joined the complex. A smaller 140 square meter space was added. Then a larger 500 square meter hall followed. It was divisible for sports like inline hockey and martial arts. The total area now reached a more substantial 1240 square meters.
The official opening of the complete TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße occurred in December 2010. Martin Schwacke the head of TU Berlin’s construction department spoke. Doris Schmidt the head of TU Hochschulsports also shared remarks. A tour showcased the impressive new facilities. Its proximity to the TU Berlin campus was highlighted. It provided convenient access for students and staff. The building’s combination of sports and seminar rooms was praised. It created excellent conditions for events and competitions.
The TU-Sportzentrum Dovestraße stands as a testament to perseverance. It’s a place where athletic dreams are pursued. The echoes of countless practices and competitions fill its halls. It’s a significant part of TU Berlin’s history. Its story is one of growth and renewal. A testament to the importance of physical activity and community within the university. And this is it right here. The heart of TU Berlin’s athletic life.
