Houston Street served as both a home for Rev. C. Stadler and the first meeting place for this fledgling congregation. Mt. Olive Lutheran Church officially became a congregation on October 31, 1926. The church quickly outgrew its initial space. In 1926, a chapel and school were built on Buena Vista Street, marking a significant step in their growth. A beautiful painting for the altar and a carved relief of the Disciples’ foot-washing, crafted by talented congregant G.G. Estill, adorned the new chapel.
Mt. Olive Lutheran Church’s early years were marked by challenges, including pastoral transitions and financial difficulties. Despite these setbacks, the congregation persevered. A bell, weighing six hundred pounds and inscribed with “Come, for all things are now ready,” was gifted to the church in 1930, a symbol of hope and invitation. This same bell continues to call worshippers to Mt. Olive to this day. The church continued to grow, even using the parsonage’s back porch as a classroom during periods of overcrowding. A new school building was dedicated in 1932, a testament to the community’s commitment to education. The church also established a cafeteria program, with Mrs. Repp, the pastor’s mother, serving as the cook without pay.
Through the decades, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church experienced both growth and change. The congregation relocated twice, first to Westshire in 1962 and then to its current location on West Loop 1604 South in 2004. Each move represented a new chapter in their story, a testament to their adaptability and unwavering faith. The church has been served by fourteen pastors throughout its history. Each pastor has left their mark, guiding the congregation through different eras and challenges. The church has seen the rise and fall of its school and daycare programs, adapting to the evolving needs of the community.
