Once called Clinton, Galena Park has a story etched in Texas history. The city is located in Harris County. It sits on the north bank of the Houston Ship Channel. Let’s delve into the history of Galena Park.

Isaac Batterson and his family first settled here in 1833. This area was part of the Ezekiel Thomas survey. Batterson purchased 1,000 acres from Thomas’s estate. This land became the heart of Galena Park.

Originally, Clinton served as a farming and ranching community. The 1880s brought transformation. It became a railroad center along the new Port of Houston. The petrochemical industry arrived in the early 1900s. Clinton transformed into a refinery center.

In 1928, the settlement applied for a post office. But there was another Clinton, Texas. The request was denied. The town took a new name. It became Galena Park. The Galena Signal Oil Company of Texas inspired the new name. The company had built the first refinery here. Clinton’s original name lives on. It is now Clinton Drive, a major street in the city. Galena Park incorporated in 1935. Houston did not annex Galena Park’s territory. Houston grew as a port and Galena Park expanded. By the 1940s, residents considered the city part of greater Houston.

Galena Park’s economy suffered in the early 1980s. Cranes reduced the need for longshoremen. Steel mill layoffs also hurt the economy. Overseas competition contracted the U.S. steel industry. After the September 11 attacks, seaport security tightened. Sailors could not easily leave docked ships.

Galena Park holds a special place in Texas lore. On April 19, 1836, General Sam Houston used the Batterson house. He made rafts to ferry his army across the rain-swollen Buffalo Bayou. Houston left 250 ill soldiers near the Batterson House. After crossing, Houston defeated the Mexicans. He won independence for Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto.

The City of Galena Park incorporated on September 21, 1935. The city has prospered ever since. The population has grown from 1,500 to over 10,000.

Esmeralda Moya made history in 2014. She became the first female Hispanic mayor.

Galena Park provides public education. Students attend schools in the Galena Park Independent School District. The Galena Park Branch of the Harris County Public Library serves the community.

Today, Galena Park is more than just a historical footnote. It’s a thriving community. Kinder Morgan is a major employer. The city and school district also provide jobs. Galena Park continues to evolve while cherishing its rich history.
