The McKinney Humanities Building, a bustling hub of activity, stands as a testament to her legacy. You see, Mary, a dedicated educator who served in San Antonio schools for 25 years, never forgot the importance of education. While attending postgraduate classes at UTSA, she overheard students struggling to afford tuition. This sparked a fire in her heart, a desire to ease their burden. She established the Felix and Elizabeth McKinney Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in honor of her parents who valued education despite never having the opportunity themselves. But Mary’s generosity didn’t end there. Upon her passing in 2009, she bequeathed her entire estate, a staggering $22 million, to UTSA. This included three South Texas ranches, a testament to her family’s roots and her own belief in the power of legacy. Today, the McKinney Humanities Building, originally the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, stands as a symbol of her unwavering support for education and her profound impact on generations of UTSA students.
