Established in 1883 West High School stands as one of Denver’s oldest secondary schools. West High School reflects the evolution of education and community it serves. Over the years West High School has remained a beacon of learning. It exemplifies dedication to its students.

West High School’s history is rich. The first graduates were Charles McDonough, Effie Hallam, Lelia Williams, Frances Brandt, Laura Duccy, and Morrison Stillwell. They graduated on June 13 1884. In 1902 West High School merged with School District No 1. It then became Denver Public Schools’ second high school.

In 1926 West High School moved to its current location at 9th and Elati. The building has an English Gothic style. Light brick and buff terra cotta trimmings adorn the building. Inside are spacious halls plus academic scientific and vocational classrooms. The building at West High School facilitates varied learning experiences.

West High School has a history of activism. In 1969 Chicano students organized walkouts. These were to fight racism and discrimination. These protests became known as the “West High Blowouts”. Students from other Denver high schools joined in. They demanded bilingual education and culturally relevant curriculum. They also wanted equitable opportunities.

In 2012 West High School split into two smaller schools. These were West Early College and West Leadership Academy. This was an attempt to boost academic scores. The two schools shared a building. They remained unified for extracurriculars. Academically they broke into two schools.

West High School boasts a 1082-seat auditorium. It underwent a complete state-of-the-art renovation in 2014. The gymnasium seats 2000 people. These spaces provide ample room for school events.

In 2021 West Early College and West Leadership Academy reunified. They became West High School again. Students and staff advocated for reunification. They wanted to embrace the school’s history. They also sought to end the rivalry between the two small schools. West High School also houses West Middle School.

As of 2021 West High School had a total enrollment of 771 students. The school’s demographics are diverse. The student body is 96% minority students.

The athletic teams at West High School are known as the Cowboys and Cowgirls. The school competes in multiple athletic divisions. These include football and other sports. Student-athletes from nearby schools are welcome.

West High School continues to honor its commitment to community and diversity. It provides quality education. The school nurtures the potential of every student. West High School prepares them to succeed in a diverse world.
