Elevated above Lokstedt, the Christ-König-Kirche’s slender tower pierces the Hamburg skyline. This striking structure isn’t just any church. It’s the only one in Hamburg, and the only Lutheran church, bearing the name Christ-König-Kirche. The name, meaning “Christ the King,” reflects the church’s dedication to the kingship of Jesus Christ, a theme beautifully captured in hymns like “Jesus Christus herrscht als König.” The Christ-König-Kirche’s journey began long before its physical construction in 1954. Architects Friedrich Dyrssen and Gert Johanssen brought to life plans initially drafted by Dyrssen back in 1933. The idea itself, however, had been germinating for two decades prior. The church’s unique 31-meter tower, a bold architectural choice for its time, foreshadowed the designs of later decades. The Christ-König-Kirche stands as a testament to innovative construction. The church’s nave, designed to accommodate 600 worshippers, features a skeleton structure of concrete. Non-load-bearing sections are crafted from brick, while a classic saddle roof adds a touch of traditionalism. Stepping inside the Christ-König-Kirche, your gaze is drawn towards the altar by the trapezoidal layout and the dramatically tiered concrete beams. The interior, however, hasn’t always looked as it does today. It underwent two major transformations. The first, in 1980, accommodated a new heating system. The second, in 2006, saw architect Matthias Johanssen bathe the space in its current serene, light color scheme. The altar of the Christ-König-Kirche is a focal point. A bronze crucifix, sculpted by Rolf Görler in 1959, takes center stage. Directly behind it, a large wooden cross rises towards the ceiling. The wall itself is adorned with abstract patterns. A golden stripe symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth. Fifty multicolored panels represent the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. Above, the five bells of Christ-König-Kirche, cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in 1955, ring out a melody based on the introitus “Ad te levavi animam meam” (“To you I lift up my soul”). And within the church resonates the music of the 1958 Rudolf von Beckerath organ. With 25 registers, approximately 1400 pipes, and two manuals and pedals, it fills the sanctuary with rich and complex tones. The Christ-König-Kirche is more than just a building. It’s a living embodiment of faith, history, and architectural ingenuity.
