Queensland’s first railway workshops, the North Ipswich Railway Workshops, were established in 1864. They stand as a testament to the pioneering spirit of this region. The North Ipswich Railway Workshops played a crucial role in connecting the coast to the productive Darling Downs region. Imagine, the very first train journey in Queensland began right here in Ipswich in 1865. It wasn’t in Brisbane, as you might expect. It chugged from here to Grandchester, then known as Bigges Camp. The workshops, initially tasked with assembling and maintaining imported equipment, quickly evolved. By 1877, the North Ipswich Railway Workshops had produced their first locomotive, the A10 class. It was built largely from spare parts, showcasing the ingenuity of the workers. Over time, these workshops became a powerhouse of locomotive construction, producing a staggering 218 steam engines. The last one, a DD17 class, rolled out in 1952. The workshops’ expansion mirrored Queensland’s growth. The site we see today took shape in the 1880s and continued to expand into the 20th century. A pivotal figure in this expansion was William Nisbet. He brought his international railway experience to the North Ipswich Railway Workshops. Nisbet’s vision shaped the workshops with larger buildings, overhead cranes, and a traverser to move equipment efficiently. The North Ipswich Railway Workshops were not just about machines and metal. It was a place of innovation. In 1918, the workshops hosted Queensland’s first iron ore smelting trial. During World War II, they answered the call to arms, producing munitions, including a massive 30-ton casting in 1942. The North Ipswich Railway Workshops stand as a symbol of Queensland’s industrial and social history. They represent the dedication and skills of countless workers who kept Queensland moving.
