Did you know that the Church of the Nativity in Manhattan once stood proudly on Second Avenue? It wasn’t always there. The Church of the Nativity started its life in 1842. Father Andrew Byrne purchased a building. It had previously been a Presbyterian church. He transformed it into the Church of the Nativity. This was a significant event. It addressed overcrowding in the Catholic churches of Lower Manhattan.
The original Church of the Nativity was a beautiful Greek Revival structure. The architectural firm of Town & Davis designed it. Alexander Jackson Davis was one of the key architects. The church was adorned with a Greek Doric portico. A two-stage steeple topped it all off. The Catholic Church added the words “AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM” to the facade. This translates to “To the Greater Glory of God”. A tower was added sometime later. The Church of the Nativity played a vital role in the community. For instance when St John the Baptist Church burned down in 1847. The Church of the Nativity took on its parishioners.
Sadly a fire devastated the interior of the Church of the Nativity in 1912. The historic organ was destroyed. This was a significant loss for the parish. The Church of the Nativity was rebuilt in 1970. This time in a starkly modern style. The new building was a departure from the original. It was designed by Genovese & Maddalene. The Modernist structure reflected the architectural trends of the time. However this newer incarnation of the Church of the Nativity didn’t last forever. Sadly the Church of the Nativity was closed in 2015. It merged with the Most Holy Redeemer Parish.
The building itself eventually met a similar fate. The Church of the Nativity was sold to developers. It was demolished in 2022. This marked the end of an era. The Church of the Nativity remains a significant part of New York City’s history. Its story unfolds from a Greek Revival gem to a modernist structure. Finally ending as a memory. It serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of the city. The Church of the Nativity held a special place in the hearts of many. It was not just a place of worship. It was a community hub for decades. The Church of the Nativity’s legacy continues to resonate. The memories linger of the parishioners. And the important role it played in the East Village.
