Doesn’t the name Gemeindehaus Sankt Jakobi evoke images of a grand church? This Gemeindehaus stands as a reminder of what once was. It whispers tales of a magnificent church that shaped Rostock’s history.

Gemeindehaus Sankt Jakobi is more than just a building. It represents the lost Jakobikirche. The Jakobikirche was once one of Rostock’s four main churches. It stood proudly between Apostelstraße and Pädagogienstraße. As the youngest of Rostock’s great parish churches, it held a special place in the city’s heart.

To understand the significance of Gemeindehaus Sankt Jakobi, we need to travel back in time. Around 1300 the construction of St. Jakobi began. It became the parish church of Rostock’s Neustadt in the west. The Jakobikirche was completed in the second half of the 14th century. It stood as a symbol of the Hanseatic city’s wealth. Its design was more magnificent than Rostock’s other main parish churches.

The Jakobikirche boasted a rectangular choir. It had bundle pillars and thirty altars from the pre-Reformation era. Its design included an unusual element for brick Gothic architecture. Laufgänge were in the side aisles. These are also found in Rostock’s Petrikirche. The six-bay building featured cross-ribbed vaults and no transepts. A copper helm with two galleries topped the church.

Between 1484 and 1571 St. Jakobi was a collegiate foundation. This appointment by Pope Innocent VIII led to conflict. The Domfehde conflict in 1486 resulted in Rostock’s defeat. The leaders were executed. In 1487 Rostock faced excommunication. Consequently, the university had to leave. Despite this, it returned a year later.

Tragedy struck during the British bombing raids of 1942. Large parts of the Jakobikirche were destroyed. The tower burned completely. The interior was lost forever. This included Rudolf Stockmann’s Renaissance pulpit from 1582. A crucifix from the 15th century also perished. Epitaphs from the 16th century and numerous paintings vanished. The roof was destroyed. The vault was damaged.

In May 1947 a nearby bunker exploded. This caused the nave to collapse. Southern chapel extensions and side walls suffered. The tower and parts of the choir remained as ruins. But in 1960 the remains were demolished. The church’s former site became Klaus-Störtebeker-Platz.

Today a memorial site stands between Apostelstraße, Bei der Jakobikirche, and Pädagogienstraße. It marks the spot where St. Jakobi once stood. Columns on the north side show the height of the former north side aisle. An original grave slab from the Jakobikirche is on display. The church’s floor plan is marked in stone. Bronze plates indicate the former locations of the organ, altar, and portals.

Gemeindehaus Sankt Jakobi connects us to the past. It reminds us of the Jakobikirche’s grandeur and its tragic end. As you stand here imagine the towering church that once graced this space.
