Designed by famed Galveston architect Nicholas J Clayton this Queen Anne style residence is the Baden-Sproule House. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 1989. It stands as a testament to Galveston’s architectural heritage.

Ida B Baden a wealthy Galveston property owner built the Baden-Sproule House in 1899. She held considerable stock in the Galveston Wharf Company a remarkable feat for a woman of her time. Sadly Ida died young in 1906 at only 43 years old. Her sister inherited the estate.

West Island landowner John D Settle played a key role in the house’s construction. He assisted Miss Baden with architectural arrangements showcasing a collaborative spirit. Imagine the conversations they must have had choosing design elements. The house was more than just bricks and mortar. It represented ambition and cooperation.

In 1913 Benno Sproule an ocean freight broker purchased the property. His family lived there until 1959. The Sproules added their own chapters to the house’s story. Their presence extended the life and legacy of the Baden-Sproule House.

The Baden-Sproule House is a beautiful example of Queen Anne architecture. A wraparound veranda with turned posts graces the home. Bow windows at both the first and second floor levels add charm. Fishscale shingles and a Palladian-inspired motif further enhance its beauty. The paneled fireplace back and corbelled chimney caps are outstanding.

This plaque celebrates more than just a house. It commemorates the lives and achievements of the women and men who shaped this home’s story. It highlights a significant piece of Galveston Island’s past. It shows how the past enriches the present. The Baden-Sproule House reminds us that every building has a story. This beautiful house is an important element of Galveston’s history.
