They practiced firestick farming ingenious fishing methods. They traversed kul’gun transit routes connecting to other clans.

The name Oxley itself is a tribute to explorer John Oxley. In December 1823 he surveyed Oxley Creek initially calling it Canoe Creek. This was in recognition of shipwrecked sailors who used canoes to navigate the creek. Edmund Lockyer later renamed it honoring Oxley. The suburb inherited the creek’s name.

The first land sales in Oxley happened in 1851. The suburb’s boundaries once stretched much further encompassing Chelmer Graceville Corinda Willawong and Durack. The Ipswich Road significantly shaped Oxley’s early development despite the railway connecting it to Brisbane.
