Did you ever hear of a place called “heavenly pit”? We’re standing before the Xiaozhai Tiankeng, often called just that. Xiaozhai Tiankeng translates to “Little Village Heavenly Pit”. This sinkhole is a breathtaking marvel of nature. It’s the world’s deepest sinkhole, right here in Fengjie County, Chongqing, China. Xiaozhai Tiankeng is an enormous chasm carved into the earth. It measures a staggering 626 meters long and 537 meters wide. Its depth plunges between 511 and 662 meters. Imagine, that’s over 2000 feet deep. This massive hole wasn’t created by a meteor or some sudden cataclysm. Instead, it was patiently sculpted over millennia by the relentless work of water. Rainwater, slightly acidic, seeped into the limestone bedrock. It slowly dissolved the rock, creating caves and tunnels. Eventually, the ceilings of these underground chambers collapsed, revealing the immense void we see today. Xiaozhai Tiankeng isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a double-nested structure, like two giant bowls stacked within each other. A sloping ledge separates these bowls, a testament to soil trapped within the limestone. During the rainy season, you can witness a spectacular waterfall cascading into the depths of the Tiankeng. And deep beneath the surface, an underground river continues its tireless work. This river flows through the Difeng Cave, the very heart of this natural wonder. The river’s journey spans over 8.5 kilometers, carving its way through the darkness. It eventually emerges, creating a dramatic 46-meter waterfall that plunges into the Migong River. This unique environment fosters an incredible diversity of life. Over 1,285 species of plants thrive here, including the ancient ginkgo tree. Rare animals like the clouded leopard and the Chinese giant salamander also call this place home.
