Deep in the heart of southern Nuremberg stands Corpus Christi. A Catholic parish church it welcomes all. Its story begins not in stone but in faith. Juliana of Liege a nun had visions. God she claimed revealed a need for a feast day honoring the Eucharist.

This holy communion central to Catholicism became the heart of Corpus Christi. It celebrates the body of Christ. This feast day wasn’t instant. Juliana petitioned the Bishop of Liege. He agreed. A synod in 1246 decreed annual celebration.

The spread of Corpus Christi took time. It became more widespread after Juliana and the bishop died. Pope Urban IV’s papal bull in 1264 made it a feast across the Latin Rite. It’s celebrated on the Thursday after the octave of Pentecost. This Thursday remembers the Last Supper. Maundy Thursday the eve of Jesus’ death is the reason behind the Thursday date.

Corpus Christi is primarily Roman Catholic. It’s also acknowledged by some Anglican churches notably the Church of England. Some Western Rite Orthodox Christians observe it too. Medieval Europe saw mystery plays performed during this popular time. Roman Catholic bishops attend their cathedrals for Corpus Christi.

Many places celebrate Corpus Christi with a procession. A priest carries the Eucharist in a monstrance. Streets and squares were once beautifully adorned for the processions. The Blessed Sacrament was sheltered by a canopy. This beautiful tradition lives on. It’s a reminder of the deep-seated faith of the people of Nuremberg and beyond. It’s a tradition linking us to centuries of devotion. The Corpus Christi Church stands tall a testament to unwavering belief.
