Built in 1956 Vigyan Bhavan stands proudly in New Delhi. It’s more than just a building. It’s a stage for history. This magnificent structure has witnessed countless events. National and international conferences have unfolded within its walls. Distinguished world leaders and dignitaries have graced its halls. Think of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1983. The 7th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement also took place here. Even the SAARC Summit found its home within Vigyan Bhavan’s impressive architecture.

Vigyan Bhavan isn’t just any conference center. It’s a carefully curated space. It holds only national level functions and conferences. Government of India functions take priority. State Governments PSUs and Autonomous Bodies follow. It’s a place of great importance. Even NGOs and private enterprises can use the space under specific conditions. The President Vice President or Prime Minister must be present.

The architecture itself is a blend of styles. R P Gehlote of the Central Public Works Department designed the main building. He skillfully incorporated elements of British Raj architecture. The nearby Secretariat Building and Lutyens’ Delhi reflect similar influences. But Gehlote didn’t stop there. He seamlessly integrated Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. Elements of ancient Buddhist architecture are also present. The chaitya arches of Ajanta Caves inspired certain features. The overall style remains modernistic with stunning revivalist elements.

Vigyan Bhavan isn’t just one large hall. It boasts a massive Plenary hall seating over 1200 delegates. Six smaller halls cater to various needs. Their capacities range from over 65 to over 375 delegates. A VIP Lounge provides comfort and convenience. Office blocks are there for on-site needs. A documentation center ensures records are well kept. There’s even a studio a business center and an exhibition hall. Later an annexe was added. It houses four committee rooms and a media center. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and INVEST INDIA also reside within the annexe. This impressive structure stands adjacent to the Vice President’s House. The Atrium manages food and beverage services. The Ashok Group of the India Tourism Development Corporation runs this section.

However a change is coming. As part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project Vigyan Bhavan will be demolished. A new Central Conference Center will be built. It will stand next to the National Archives. This represents the end of an era. The history held within its walls will become a memory. But the legacy of Vigyan Bhavan will endure. It has served as a vital hub for India’s government and international relations. Its story is one of diplomacy collaboration and progress. Its spirit will undoubtedly live on in the future.
