Imagine, if you will, Lille in 1066. That is about when the Rue de la Clef first appeared. This street is one of the oldest in Lille.

Rue de la Clef has a long history. For a time, it was even renamed Rue Marat. But it eventually regained its original name.

Until recently Rue de la Clef had a bad reputation. If you asked someone where Rue de la Clef was, you might get a funny look. At night, it was known for prostitution.

But that changed about ten years ago. Rue de la Clef transformed almost overnight. Music shops, skate shops, and fashion boutiques opened. The street became a trendy spot for young people.

Today, most of those shops are gone. They have been replaced by luxury fashion boutiques. Rue de la Clef has evolved again.

The name “Rue de la Clef” comes from the Hôtel de la Clef. This hotel was located on the street. The street is now a pleasant place to walk and shop.

Vieux-Lille is known for its pre-19th-century buildings. Rue de la Clef is one of the oldest streets in this district. Other old streets include Rue de la Grande-Chaussée and Rue des Chats-Bossus.

After the French Revolution, Rue de la Clef was temporarily renamed Rue Marat. But it eventually returned to its original name. The buildings along Rue de la Clef date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They reflect Flemish Renaissance style.

Today Rue de la Clef is a reminder of Lille’s past. It has transformed from a street with a bad reputation to a modern shopping street. Take a stroll down Rue de la Clef. Experience its blend of history and modern life.
