“Ling Nan Zhong Zhen” echoes in the wind here at Yuntou Promontory. This place is more than just a cape. It is a sentinel guarding stories of Shenzhen.
Yuntou Promontory offers a panoramic view of Shenzhen’s past and present. The city’s story began not far from here in Nantou Ancient Town. It was the heart of Bao’an County.
In 331 AD, Nantou became the Dongguan Commandery’s seat. Emperor Cheng of Jin recognized its strategic importance. He divided Nanhai Commandery in two. Nantou’s story as a vital administrative center began.
For 2000 years, Nantou thrived. It became the administrative hub of the Lingnan coastal region. It was a crucial military stronghold. It became a key point for river and sea transport. Nantou was also a center for foreign trade. This led to its title: “the first commandery of East Guangdong and the origin of Hong Kong and Macau.”
Just a short distance away from Yuntou Promontory lies Xin’an County. Xin’an included both Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The name Xin’an reflects hope. It means “out with the old and in with the new.” It also means “to turn peril into safety.”
Let’s talk about the Ming Dynasty. In 1573, Xin’an County was established. The county government was based in Nantou. Jin Wenmo inscribed “Ling Nan Zhong Zhen” on the South Gate plaque. This gate was built over 600 years ago.
Nantou’s South Gate stood strong. It was a symbol of resilience. The characters “Ning Nan” marked the gateway. Nantou witnessed intense struggles between the British and Chinese. This was after the First Opium War. The Xin’an County Government Office became the headquarters. It was a center for battles against foreign invasion.
Today, Nantou Ancient Town still stands. It showcases Cantonese architecture. You can also see influences from Hakka, Chaoshan, and Nanyang styles.
Think of the Dongguan Assembly Hall. It was the chamber of commerce for Dongguan businessmen. Liang Jin’ao witnessed Nantou’s bustling activity. He wrote about it during the Qing dynasty.
Imagine the merchants gathering. They would discuss business and negotiate prices. The Dongguan Assembly Hall was a hub of commerce.
Shenzhen’s transformation is remarkable. It evolved from fishing villages into a metropolis. In 1980, Shenzhen became China’s first Special Economic Zone. This led to rapid growth and innovation. Shenzhen became known as “China’s Silicon Valley.”
