Gazing up at this bronze figure, can you sense the weight of history it carries? This is the Bismarck-Statue, a monument to a man who shaped modern Germany. The Bismarck-Statue stands on Anger 33, marking a pivotal moment in Otto von Bismarck’s life. Long before he became the “Iron Chancellor,” a young Bismarck arrived in Erfurt for the Union Parliament of 1850. He was a relatively unknown Prussian representative, sent to participate in the creation of a new German constitution. Bismarck’s time in Erfurt wasn’t marked by diligent parliamentary work. He found more enjoyment exploring the city, indulging in local delicacies and the famed Felsenkellerbier. He even later reminisced about his time in Erfurt, claiming he’d “earned his diplomatic spurs” here. Although the parliament ultimately failed, Bismarck’s presence left a mark on Erfurt. Fifty years later, locals remembered him as the future unifier of the German Empire. In 1904, the city honored him with the original Bismarck-Statue on this very spot. It depicted Bismarck in his chancellor’s uniform, a symbol of his later achievements. The statue even bore his famous quote: “We Germans fear God, but nothing else in the world!” Sadly, this original monument was removed in 1948, deemed a symbol of militarism. However, the story doesn’t end there. In 2004, thanks to the Bismarck Tower Society, a new statue by Christian Paschold was erected. This Bismarck-Statue, the one we see today, continues to remind us of the Iron Chancellor’s early steps on the path to power, right here in Erfurt.
