Tucked away in the tranquil countryside near Milan, Cascina Gavazzo whispers tales of a bygone era. The name, “Gavaz” in the Lombard language, evokes images of rustic charm and agricultural heritage. Cascina Gavazzo stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of rural life amidst encroaching urbanization. This seemingly simple farmstead holds a rich history, intertwined with the ebb and flow of power and the resilience of a small community. Once a small village with ancient roots, Gavazzo was deeply connected to Milan. Its residents belonged to the Pieve di San Giuliano, their lives interwoven with the surrounding areas of Pantigliate, Settala, Paullo, Tribiano, and Canobbio. In 1751, a mere 65 souls called Gavazzo home, their land under the feudal rule of the Cà Granda di Milano. The Napoleonic era brought change but little growth. By 1805, the population remained stagnant at 69, leading to Gavazzo’s absorption into the municipality of Bustighera in 1809. Bustighera itself was later annexed to Mediglia in 1811. Briefly, in 1816, with the establishment of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, Gavazzo regained its independence. However, its small size rendered it unsustainable. In 1841, the Austrians decreed its final annexation to the neighboring Mercugnano, sealing its fate. Today, Cascina Gavazzo stands as a poignant reminder of this lost community. It has been revitalized by the Ranghetti family. They have embraced multifunctionality. They sell their farm-fresh milk, along with other local products like cheese, honey, and even firewood. The Ranghetti family also provide agricultural services and contribute to cultural and territorial promotion. They even offer snow removal services. Despite a devastating fire that rendered their main barn unusable, the Ranghettis persevered. They continue to operate, selling milk from their 40 cows through a vending machine and a small shop. They even host beehives for the Veca apiary. They dream of transforming the old farmworkers’ houses into a charming rural agriturismo. They envision connecting to nearby towns with cycling paths, further weaving Cascina Gavazzo into the fabric of the region. Cascina Gavazzo stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of rural life, embracing the past while looking towards the future.
