Born from a pressing need, Campion Hall at Boston College stands as a testament to growth and adaptation. Campion Hall is now before us. Let’s explore its story.

Campion Hall is named for Saint Edmund Campion. He was an English Jesuit and martyr. Born in London in 1539, Campion lived during the Reformation’s religious turmoil. He joined the Jesuits and returned to England. His mission was to restore the country’s allegiance to Rome. He was captured, tortured, and executed for his beliefs.

Campion Hall opened its doors in 1955. It became the home of the Carolyn and Peter Lynch School of Education and Human Development. This addition addressed the increasing demand for educators.

The Lynch School of Education and Human Development came into existence in 1951. It was created to meet the growing needs of public and parochial schools in the Boston area. Campion Hall symbolized Boston College’s commitment to education. It also represented its forward-thinking approach. The school was one of the first entirely coeducational schools at Boston College. The William Connell School of Nursing, established in 1947, was the other.

Before Campion Hall, the campus was transforming. Boston College, founded in 1863, aimed to educate children of Catholic immigrants. The original location was on Harrison Avenue. But the college expanded to Chestnut Hill.

In 1907, the college acquired land overlooking the reservoir. Charles Donagh Maginnis won a design competition. He envisioned Gothic structures that would define the campus. Gasson Hall, St Mary’s Hall, and Bapst Library emerged. They became architectural gems. These buildings set the standard for future construction.

Campion Hall joined these landmarks. It reflected the Collegiate Gothic style. This style suited the area’s topography. It also aligned with the university’s religious foundation.

Today, Campion Hall remains vital. It’s home to the Campus School at Boston College. The Campus School educates students with significant support needs. This special education day school operates within the Lynch School. This collaboration provides access to resources and expertise. Boston College undergraduates volunteer at Campus School. Boston College athletes and teams also collaborate with them.

Campion Hall stands as a hub of learning and development. It honors Saint Edmund Campion’s legacy. It embodies Boston College’s dedication to education and service. As we conclude our visit, remember Campion Hall’s role. It continues to shape the future of education.
