From 72 abandoned churches, a phoenix rose. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary stands before us, a testament to resilience and faith. It’s locally known as the Mitropoli Athinon. This grand cathedral wasn’t always the majestic structure we see today. Its story is one of persistence, royal influence, and a touch of architectural evolution. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary’s cornerstone was laid in 1842 by King Otto and Queen Amalia, a royal gesture that marked the beginning of a complex construction process. Initially designed by the renowned Theophil Hansen, the architect behind the Academy of Athens and the National Library, the cathedral faced an early setback. Lack of funds halted construction for three years. Thanks to the generosity of King Otto, benefactor Georgios Sinas, fundraising efforts, and even the sale of church properties, the project eventually resumed. The baton then passed to Dimitrios Zezos, who incorporated Greek-Byzantine elements into Hansen’s original vision. Upon Zezos’s death, Francois Boulanger and Panagis Kalkos steered the project to completion in 1862. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary was finally inaugurated. The cathedral’s design reflects this multi-stage process, resulting in a captivating blend of neoclassical and Greek-Byzantine styles. The three-aisled basilica, topped by a majestic dome, showcases the architectural ingenuity of its creators. The cathedral has witnessed pivotal moments in modern Greek history, serving as the venue for royal christenings, weddings, and funerals. Within its hallowed halls, King Constantine II was christened, King Paul I mourned, and Prince George exchanged vows with Princess Marie Bonaparte. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary also safeguards the sacred relics of two Orthodox saints: Saint Philothei of Athens and Saint Gregorios V, Patriarch of Constantinople. Their presence adds another layer of spiritual significance to this iconic landmark. In 1982 and 1999, earthquakes shook Athens, inflicting damage upon the cathedral. Years of restoration and renovation followed, culminating in its reopening for services in 2016. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary stands as a symbol of perseverance, a beacon of faith amidst the bustling city.
