Ipswich was selected as the railway’s eastern hub. It was a vital river port connecting to the Darling Downs.
The Railways Act of 1863 set things in motion. Construction began in 1864. The first line ran from Ipswich to Bigge’s Camp. This later became Grandchester. The line opened in July 1865.
But progress demanded changes. By 1875, a new line was built. It crossed the Bremer River west of Ipswich, at Sadlier’s Crossing. This was part of the Brisbane to Ipswich extension. The original line served the locomotive and carriage sheds.
The Main Line needed upgrades. In the 1890s, iron rails were replaced with steel. Bridges were strengthened to carry heavier locomotives. A key decision came in 1899.
