They also compete in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The team’s players are usually between 17 and 19 years old. The oldest players are under 20 when the next U-20 tournament begins.
This team is vital. It serves as a feeder for the Malaysia national under-23 football team. Players can move between levels. A player could play for the U-19s. Then they could play for the senior side. After that, they might play for the U-19s again.
Once, the Football Association of Malaysia created the Harimau Muda Project. This happened after poor performance in international games. The under-19 team became Harimau Muda C. They aimed to create a bigger pool of players. Harimau Muda C fed into Harimau Muda B. Then Harimau Muda B fed into Harimau Muda A. Harimau Muda C played in the FAM League. They only fielded players under 18. The team focused on developing young Malaysian players. They did not recruit foreign players.
