Ever wondered where the magic happens before it graces the stage? The Werkhaus is where the Nationaltheater Mannheim’s visions take shape. It is more than just a building. It is the creative heart where sets are built. Costumes are sewn and dreams are brought to life.

The Werkhaus isn’t just a backdrop. It plays a vital role in Mannheim’s cultural landscape. This is where artists experiment and established productions evolve. The Studio Werkhaus provides an intimate setting. Here you can witness a mixture of established performances and exciting premieres. You can also enjoy contemporary dramas and engaging discussions.

Young artists find a home here. They present their initial works in a professional environment. Christian Holtzhauer says that the studio is a special place. He is the director of the play. He says that here you can get close to the actors. Discover exciting young talents. Learn about theater forms today that will prevail on the big stages tomorrow.

The building itself has a story. In 2003, a competition was held for a new workshop building. The aim was to create a space of about 4,000 square meters. The design needed to complement the Nationaltheater Mannheim. The new Werkhaus clarifies the urban situation. Its unique architectural language creates a new unique place. It occupies the open block corner. It forms a counterpart to the former school building. The geometry of the round corners picks up the corner formation of the block edges. It creates a smooth transition into the courtyard.

The compact building volume presents itself as a restrained functional building. The design and structure of the facades create measured references. They create exciting spatial effects. They give the building its own identity and charisma. The smooth shell of the new building contrasts with the strongly structured facades of the old building. It creates a dialogue between old and new.

Inside, the Werkhaus is designed for functionality. Office spaces and workshops have window ribbons. The painting room and decoration receive additional skylights. This ensures even and glare-free lighting. The architecture is characterized by simplicity and precision. This reflects the functional and technical character of the building.

Getting here is easy. You can take tram lines 2, 4, or 5 to the Nationaltheater. Alternatively, lines 5 and 7 will take you to Theresienkrankenhaus. Your ticket doubles as a VRN ticket. This allows for a relaxed journey.

The Werkhaus also caters to cyclists. VRNnextbike stations are nearby. If you prefer to drive, parking garages are available. You can find them at S6 32-33 and the Congress Center Rosengarten.

Accessibility is a priority at the Werkhaus. The lobby is accessible for wheelchair users. Staff will assist you to your seat.

Before the show, enjoy refreshments at the Casino. It is the theater bar. Keep in mind that there is no staffed cloakroom. Also, admission is not possible after the performance begins.

The Werkhaus is more than bricks and mortar. It is a space where creativity flourishes. It contributes to Mannheim’s vibrant cultural scene. From innovative designs to captivating performances, the Werkhaus is essential to the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
