Is this grandeur not a sight to behold? The Mansions, with its striking Victorian architecture, has stood as a silent sentinel on this corner of George and Margaret Streets since 1889. Designed by the renowned architect G.H.M. Addison, The Mansions was originally built as six luxurious terrace houses. This was a time when Brisbane was experiencing a rapid boom, fueled by a burgeoning population and economic prosperity. The Mansions, with its intricate details and high-quality materials, was a testament to this newfound wealth. Interestingly, the construction of The Mansions, as terraced houses, was quite uncommon due to a law passed in 1885 that effectively prohibited their development except as rental investments. The Mansions, however, sidestepped this restriction, as its owners were three prominent politicians: Boyd Dunlop Morehead, the then Premier of Queensland; William Pattison, the Treasurer; and John Stevenson, a Member of Parliament. These men were not just politicians. They were businessmen and investors, eager to capitalize on Brisbane’s growth. The Mansions, with its prime location near Parliament House, was meant to be an exclusive address for the city’s elite. Despite its auspicious beginnings, The Mansions faced challenges. The economic depression of the 1890s hit Brisbane hard, and even The Mansions, with its grandeur, wasn’t immune to its effects. Occupancy rates fluctuated, and over time, it transitioned into a boarding house, housing a varied mix of tenants, from families to professionals. By the 1950s, The Mansions, like many grand old buildings, faced the threat of demolition. The Queensland Government, however, saw its potential and purchased the property, converting it into government offices. This wasn’t the end of its story, though. In the 1970s, public outcry saved The Mansions from another demolition threat, this time to make way for a new government precinct. The Mansions underwent a major restoration in the 1980s, preserving its historical façade while modernizing its interiors for commercial use. Today, The Mansions stands as a testament to Brisbane’s past. It’s a tangible link to a time of opulence and ambition, a reminder of the city’s journey through boom and bust. The Mansions, through its intricate architecture and intriguing history, offers us a glimpse into a bygone era and reminds us of the enduring power of preservation and adaptation.
