Is it possible for a building to hold its breath, waiting for the echoes of history to fill its chambers? Here at Parliament House, I believe it does. Parliament House in Brisbane stands as a testament to Queensland’s journey. This French Renaissance Revival structure, located at the corner of George and Alice Streets, has witnessed the unfolding of democracy since its first session in 1868. Parliament House wasn’t always here, though. The Parliament of Queensland initially met in a former convict barracks on Queen Street. Imagine conducting state affairs in a place once filled with the clatter of chains and the whispers of confined souls. Thankfully, a new home was sought. The selection process for the design of Parliament House was a saga in itself. Designs were submitted, rejected, and debated. Charles Tiffin, the Queensland Colonial Architect, eventually emerged victorious, amidst whispers of controversy. He even donated his prize money to the Ipswich Grammar School, a gesture some saw as a way to silence the critics. The foundation stone was laid in 1865, and Joshua Jeays, using sandstone from his own quarries, began to construct this grand edifice. The George Street frontage, with its elegant archways and colonnades, was completed in 1868. The Alice Street wing followed later, in 1889. Parliament House holds another distinction. In 1886, it became the first parliament house in Australia to be electrified. A cable, running underground from the Government Printing Office, brought the magic of electricity to these halls. Think of the marvel this must have been in those times. Over the years, Parliament House has seen its share of drama. From royal visits to political protests, the walls have absorbed the energy of countless pivotal moments. Even a tragic suicide of a Speaker in 1939 darkened these hallowed halls. Today, Parliament House continues to serve as the heart of Queensland’s democracy. The Legislative Assembly meets here, debating and shaping the future of the state. Free public tours are available, offering a glimpse into the workings of government and the rich history held within these walls. As you stand here, before the grandeur of Parliament House, take a moment to listen. You might just hear the whispers of history echoing through the sandstone.
