Let’s step back in time, imagine a small community in Plan-les-Ouates, where a group of dedicated individuals sought a space to share their faith and build a sense of belonging. In 1999, they found a small, hidden location where they could gather in the name of the Lord. This place was not easily found, tucked away behind a building, down a winding staircase in a small courtyard. This small, hidden space would become the heart of their church community for many years.
Today we stand before the Église Évangélique l’Espérance, a modern, welcoming church in Grand Lancy. After a 14-month journey of renovation, the church opened its doors in October 2008. It occupies a former industrial building, originally a small mechanical factory, which was transformed into a vibrant center of faith. Located on Chemin du Clos, it draws people from the community and beyond to its weekly services.
While the church’s previous location felt hidden, almost like an underground church in the event of persecution, as some joked at the time, the new location offers a sense of openness and visibility. The main façade is completely glazed, allowing everyone passing by to see into the sanctuary. The congregation feels connected to the neighborhood and visible in the community. They welcome all, offering a place of worship, a sense of community, and a welcoming space.
