The Jüdischer Friedhof Kronberg wasn’t always this small. In 1708, Adolf Johann Karl Freiherr von Bettendorf allowed its creation. This happened after the first Jewish cemetery near Burg Kronberg was full. The cemetery originally spanned 4875 square meters.

By 1801, the city of Kronberg owned the land. Then came the Nazis in 1933 and 1934. They destroyed most of the cemetery. They left only the northernmost and newest section untouched. What remains is just 682 square meters.

Today, about 35 gravestones stand here at Jüdischer Friedhof Kronberg. Two of these stones date back to 1745 and 1821. The most recent is from 1925. It marks the grave of Jenny Strauss. She was buried next to her husband Heymann. He died in 1917.

This place saw pain. In 2009, vandals desecrated the Jüdischer Friedhof Kronberg. They sprayed white and red paint on 19 gravestones and a memorial plaque.

The Jüdischer Friedhof Kronberg is more than stones. It reflects a community that thrived here. Jewish people lived in Kronberg as early as 1300. A synagogue once stood in Mauerstraße. It served the community until the early 20th century.

Kronberg’s Jewish community dissolved in 1908. The remaining members joined Königstein. During the Nazi era, Kronberg’s Jewish residents faced persecution. Many moved to Frankfurt. Some emigrated. The last five were deported in 1942.

Fourteen Kronberg Jews were victims of the Holocaust. Their names are remembered on a memorial stone in Rathauspark. Stolpersteine mark their last homes.
