Have you ever stood before a sentinel of the sea, a beacon of hope for ships navigating treacherous waters? This is Cape Moreton Lighthouse, a towering symbol of resilience, standing proud on the northeastern tip of Moreton Island. As the first, and the only stone-built lighthouse in Queensland, it has watched over the bustling waters of Moreton Bay for over 160 years.

Imagine a time when the northern entrance to Moreton Bay was a fearsome gatekeeper, claiming countless ships in its watery grip. This was the reality before the arrival of Cape Moreton Lighthouse. Recognizing the danger, Brisbane residents petitioned the New South Wales Government to build a beacon of light. Their cries were heard. Construction began in 1857, and the light, a brilliant spectacle piercing the darkness, was displayed for the first time.

The lighthouse stands 75 feet tall, its imposing silhouette visible for 15 nautical miles. It is a testament to the ingenuity of the time. Built of sandstone quarried from the island itself, the lighthouse was a monumental task, completed with the aid of skilled convict labor.

Its light has evolved over the years. It began with oil wick lamps and then transitioned to kerosene, acetylene gas, and electricity. Today, it is powered by solar energy, its four white flashes, separated by 3.3 seconds, a modern marvel of maritime safety.

Cape Moreton Lighthouse has a story to tell, a legacy of courage, determination, and engineering prowess. It stands as a guardian, a beacon of hope for sailors, a symbol of the indomitable spirit of those who braved the seas. Every flash of light echoes the bravery of the past and the promise of a safe passage into the future.
