At Garden City High School, the echoes of “On, Wisconsin” resonate, a slightly unusual choice for a Michigan school. Garden City High School opened its doors in 1950, welcoming its first class. Those early Cougars, however, were Panthers, sporting royal blue and gray. The school grew, and by the early 1960s, Garden City needed another high school. West Senior High, nicknamed Garden City West, opened in 1964, leaving the original school to become Garden City East. The rivalry between East and West ended in 1982 when the two schools consolidated, becoming the single Garden City High School we see today. The graduating class of ’83, a mix of Tigers and Panthers, over 600 strong, chose the new identity: Cougars, in royal blue and orange. A touch of the West’s orange and the East’s blue. Today, Garden City High School, with approximately 857 students, stands as a testament to this merged legacy. Did you know Garden City High School briefly adopted the trimester system in 2008? They reverted back to semesters in 2015. A financial decision, highlighting the challenges faced by educational institutions.
