This bridge is a symbol of Arashiyama, a popular tourist district in Kyoto known for its natural beauty. In fact, the bridge’s name, which literally means “Moon Crossing Bridge,” comes from a story about Emperor Kameyama during the Kamakura Period. He was so captivated by the beauty of the moon reflected in the river that he said it looked as if the moon was crossing the bridge. The first bridge here was built in 836, but the current bridge was finished in 1934. The bridge was built from concrete, but was designed to look like wood, with only the parapets being made from cypress wood. It’s said to bring good luck to cross the bridge, a tradition that continues today.
