Has anyone ever heard of the D’Hespel brothers and their audacious dream? Right here in Prémesques, a seemingly quiet commune in northern France, a piece of automotive history was born. Prémesques, nestled within the Métropole Européenne de Lille, isn’t just about charming landscapes and the gentle flow of the Becque du Corbeau. It’s a place where innovation once stirred, where Henri, born in Ghent, and Pierre, a native of Prémesques, dared to challenge the burgeoning automotive world. At the turn of the 20th century, these brothers founded DPSL, an automobile brand named after their family, D’Hespel. The factory was right here in Prémesques, with workshops humming in nearby Pérenchies. Imagine the clang of metal, the whirring of machinery, and the scent of oil and gasoline hanging in the air. In 1911, a DPSL car even raced in Ostend, a testament to their ambition and ingenuity. Sadly, the First World War almost entirely destroyed Prémesques, leaving scars on the land and its people. The chateau belonging to the D’Hespel de Flencques family, a landmark of the commune, was among the casualties. Rebuilt but no longer a family residence, the chateau now stands as a silent witness to Prémesques’s resilience. Today, the Domaine de la Chanterelle utilizes its magnificent reception hall for events. Prémesques also holds a deeper history, stretching back to its first mentions in 1132, when it was known as Prémeca. Over the centuries, the commune has seen the reign of various seigneurial families, including the de Prémesques, de Nouvelles, de Montigny, de Carondelet, and finally, the d’Hespel. Each family has left its mark on Prémesques, shaping its identity and contributing to the rich tapestry of its past. And let’s not forget the church of Saint-Laurent, a testament to the community’s unwavering spirit. Reconstructed multiple times, ravaged by fire in 1857, and demolished during the First World War, it stands tall today, its current iteration inaugurated in 1928. Prémesques, with its population of just over 2,000, may seem small. But its history, marked by innovation, resilience, and the echoes of ambitious dreams, is anything but.
