Can a church have two birthdays? Élise protestante Bruxelles Botanique can. This modern marvel, right here on Boulevard Bischoffsheim, was inaugurated in 1977. But its roots trace back to a simpler structure, the Temple de l’Observatoire, built in 1837. That’s the first birthday of this Protestant community. They originally gathered on Rue Verte, led by the charismatic French Methodist missionary, Philippe Boucher. He offered a style of preaching deemed “evangelical and pious” that resonated deeply with the community. They desired something different from the “rationalist and academic” approach of the established Protestant churches. Élise protestante Bruxelles Botanique, even in its early form, yearned for connection, for a spiritual home. The United States chipped in and helped fund their first real church building, that 1837 Temple de l’Observatoire. Its location on Boulevard de l’Observatoire, near Brussels’ first Royal Observatory, gave the temple its name. This striking neo-Gothic structure marked a milestone. It was the second Protestant place of worship built in Brussels and the very first neo-Gothic building in all of Belgium. Élise protestante Bruxelles Botanique, in its physical embodiment, made a statement. For many years, it was the oldest building on Boulevard Bisschoffsheim, a testament to its enduring presence. The second pastor, Léonard Anet, a Swiss preacher, carried the torch from 1843 to 1860. The church attracted notable figures like Charles Henri Lagrange, a scientist and biblical author. Artist Jacques de Lalaing and even King Albert I’s aide-de-camp, General Galet, graced its congregation. The community’s story, however, wasn’t without its internal debates. A group with Calvinist leanings split off in 1837, forming the church on Rue Belliard. These two congregations danced around each other. They united and separated twice before finally merging in 1973. This union ultimately led to the modern Élise protestante Bruxelles Botanique. The decision to demolish the historic 1837 temple in 1974 must have been heartbreaking. But from its foundations rose this contemporary structure, a blend of offices and a functional sanctuary where the community gathers to this day. The original Van Peteghem organ from 1835, thankfully, survived the transition. Its restored voice continues to resonate within these walls. Today, Élise protestante Bruxelles Botanique stands as a member of the United Protestant Church of Belgium, its story echoing both the continuity and evolution of faith in Brussels.
