This snake belongs to the Colubridae family. It’s a Chrysopelea ornata to be exact. It has two main color variations. One is a greenish yellow or pale green. The other lacks reddish vertebral spots. Its head is quite flat. It has a thin neck and atypical blunt nose. Large eyes sometimes appear red. It can grow up to 140 cm almost 5 feet long.
Did you know it’s mildly venomous? But its venom is harmless to humans unless there is an allergy. It’s a shy and fast creature. It’s virtually impossible to catch when it’s in homes. The snake is solitary. However it can live near others of its species peacefully. It’s a carnivore. It enjoys a varied diet. Small geckos lizards large Tokay geckos rodents bird eggs insects and bats are all on the menu. It’s even known to eat other snakes occasionally.
Amazingly the Amazon Golden Snake is one of the few “flying snakes”. They don’t actually fly. They glide. They flatten their bodies creating a wide cavity. They twist in mid-air as they leap from tall branches. They use this skill for hunting and to escape predators. One leap from a tall tree could take them as far as 100 meters.
