Overlooking the city of Guimarães, Cemitèrio de Monchique isn’t your typical cemetery. It’s a place where the landscape speaks volumes. The design intentionally preserves the natural contours of the Quinta de Monchique. The architects, Maria Manuel Pinto de Oliveira and Pedro Mendo, adapted the topography for its purpose. They also seamlessly integrated the cemetery into the slopes of Monte da Penha. Cemitèrio de Monchique functions as a green space, a visual extension of the hillside. It goes beyond the traditional cemetery. It embraces the modern view of funerary spaces. These include areas designed for informal burial. These areas are designed to resemble green spaces, almost like funerary gardens, with minimal furnishings. The cemetery caters to various burial preferences. There are chapel jazigos along the main path leading to the multiconfessional temple. Underground jazigos line the upper edge of Platform B. Individual sepultures, in various sizes, are spread across the platforms. Special sepultures are placed in prominent locations. Platform B resembles a traditional cemetery layout. On Platform C, sepultures line the pathways and are covered with simple stone slabs. The children’s cemetery is at the top of this platform. Platform D offers a more informal burial style, allowing only headstones. Cemitèrio de Monchique also has gavetões, a common urban burial method, and ossuaries near Platform C’s entrance. The cemetery’s design also considered practical necessities. It houses a crematorium, designated areas for groups and institutions, and special plots for prominent figures. There are also ossuaries and gavetões. The administrative area and its office are separate. Support facilities include a staff dining area, a mechanical repair shop, a materials warehouse, and an outdoor area for minor repairs. In 2005, Cemitèrio de Monchique received the 1st National Landscape Architecture Award in the “Public Outdoor Spaces” category. This award speaks to its innovative and thoughtful design. This is more than just a final resting place. It’s a space that honors both the living and the dead. Cemitèrio de Monchique offers a peaceful environment within a breathtaking landscape. It’s a testament to the evolving understanding of how we remember and celebrate life.
