Whispers of Hobbitville greet you at Allen Park. This isn’t some fantastical realm though. Allen Park in Salt Lake City boasts a unique history. It began in the 1930s thanks to Dr George A Allen and his wife Ruth. They envisioned a bird sanctuary a haven along Emigration Creek. They built small homes and log cabins. These weren’t hobbit holes. They were apartments for professors students and artists. Dr Allen even treated patients there.

The Allens’ handiwork remains. Handcrafted stone light posts stand tall. Mosaics bearing poetic phrases like “The night has a thousand eyes” add a touch of magic. Peacocks still roam the grounds a testament to Dr Allen’s love for wildlife. He also helped found the Tracy Aviary and was involved with Hogle Zoo. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of Allen Park.

The legend of Hobbitville arose later. The secluded location and smaller buildings fueled the myth of tiny secretive inhabitants. This story persists despite the park’s true history. It adds to Allen Park’s charm a sprinkle of folklore alongside its factual past.

Sadly the park fell into disrepair after Dr Allen’s death in the 1960s. But hope arrived in 2020. Salt Lake City purchased Allen Park for 7.5 million dollars. Restoration began. The park reopened to the public. It’s now a cherished public space. Community input shapes its future. Plans are underway to balance historical preservation with modern needs.

Allen Park is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to a doctor’s vision. It’s a repository of local folklore. It is a place where history and legend intertwine. Enjoy your visit to this magical little corner of Salt Lake City.
