Faster than light itself. That’s the feeling you get standing before the European XFEL.

This isn’t just any research facility. The European XFEL is a 3.4 kilometer long marvel. It generates ultrashort X-ray flashes. These flashes are 27 000 times per second. Their brilliance surpasses the best conventional X-ray sources by a billion times. Think about that for a second. A billion times brighter. This is groundbreaking technology. It opens doors to scientific advancements previously unimaginable.

Imagine the possibilities. Movies of chemical reactions happening in mere fractions of a second. Detailed images of proteins. Each atom clearly visible. The European XFEL makes this possible. We can explore nanomaterials in detail. We can even peer into the very hearts of giant planets and stars. This X-ray laser unveils the secrets of the universe.

This international project is massive. It stretches from DESY in Hamburg to Schenefeld. It’s a billion-euro endeavor. Eleven countries besides Germany partnered on this project. A separate company European XFEL GmbH was created to manage it.

DESY plays a key role. They built the heart of the laser. This is a 1.7 kilometer long superconducting accelerator. It uses the TESLA technology. DESY developed this technology with its partners. The accelerator brings electrons near light speed. Then it sends them through undulators. These magnets force electrons onto zig-zag paths. This produces incredibly short and powerful X-ray flashes. Unlike storage ring X-rays these flashes have laser properties. This makes recording holograms and other previously impossible experiments possible.

The European XFEL was the first of its kind to use a superconducting accelerator. Before it X-ray lasers produced far fewer flashes per second. The 27 000 flashes per second are game changing. They’re a decisive advantage for many experiments.

Biologists use it to image cells proteins and viruses. This helps in disease combat and medication development. Chemists can film reactions. They observe atomic interactions in slow motion. This optimizes catalysts for industrial applications. Physicists and materials scientists study nanomaterials. They create better solar cells fuel cells and data storage. Astrophysicists analyze hot dense matter. This helps us understand stars planets and nuclear fusion.

The European XFEL isn’t just a machine. It’s a window into the microcosm. It’s a testament to international collaboration. It pushes the boundaries of science. It’s the future of research right here in front of us.
