Founded in 1868 the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church stands proudly on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Its story begins not in grandeur but in a schism. A group broke away from St James’s Lutheran Church. They sought a different path a church where services were conducted in English not German. This was a bold move in a predominantly German-speaking Lutheran community.

The first Holy Trinity was a repurposed building on West 21st Street. This was just a temporary home. The congregation dreamed bigger. They envisioned a stunning new church befitting their growing community. They finally found a perfect location. It was a spot at the corner of Central Park West and 65th Street.

The construction of the current Holy Trinity building began in 1902. It was completed two years later. The architectural firm Schickel & Ditmars designed it. They were masters of Gothic Revival style. The church stands as a testament to their skill. Its stone structure soars high. A copper spire a rose window and striking red doors add to its magnificence.

The cost of construction was substantial $125000. That’s a considerable sum even for its time. The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It quickly became a hub for social programs. It offered aid and support to those affected by AIDS and other sexually transmitted illnesses.

Holy Trinity is renowned for its Bach Vespers series. Launched in 1968 this series was groundbreaking. It was the first in America to regularly feature Bach’s cantatas on their original days. The church’s choir even records hymns and liturgical music. The recordings are distributed by Augsburg Fortress Publishing House.

The Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church has even graced the silver screen. It played a role in the 1970 film The Out-of-Towners. In another memorable scene in Ghostbusters the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man unfortunately crushed the church.

This church isn’t merely a historical landmark. It’s a living breathing community. Its doors remain open. It continues to welcome people of all backgrounds. It stands as a symbol of faith resilience and service. Its legacy extends far beyond its beautiful architecture. The Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a treasure.
