How about a tower housing knowledge? That’s the striking design of Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Hierro. This public library offers a cultural signal to its neighborhood. Let’s explore this interesting building together.

The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Hierro opened its doors on March 11 2003. The widow of the writer José Hierro attended. The then-mayor José María Álvarez del Manzano also joined the opening. The library sits near the District Board sharing a spacious garden area.

Architects Ignacio Ábalos and Juan Herrero designed the José Hierro Library. They won a competition with their tower proposal. The design features halls with great heights. The atmosphere inside is one of controlled light and semi-darkness. Dark floors, satinated ceilings and Peter Halley wallpaper contribute to this.

Furniture provides artificial light. Cracks in the facade offer fragmented views of the surroundings. These small views recompose into an interesting world. The architects learned from urban peripheries. They understood the importance of cultural diversity and radical transformation. This helped them design impactful new projects.

The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Hierro spans 1866 square meters. It provides 227 reading spots. There are also 13 internet access points. The multipurpose room offers 62 seats.

The library provides many services. These include book loans and multimedia resources. You can also borrow magazines. Public internet access and Wi-Fi are available. Bibliographic information is also on offer. The library promotes reading with activities and user training.

Accessibility is a priority at the José Hierro Library. The building is accessible to people with reduced mobility. A magnetic induction loop assists those with hearing difficulties. Wheelchairs are available. The library loans magnifying glasses, guiding line magnifiers and card magnifiers. A tele-magnifier is available for use in the room. Screen reader NVDA is installed on internet computers. A magnetic loop is at the information desk and also for activities.

The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Hierro is open Monday through Friday. Its hours are 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM. During the summer from June 15 to September 15 the library closes earlier at 8:00 PM. It’s closed on holidays and December 24 and 31. You can reach the library by Metro line 7 at Las Musas station.

The Biblioteca Pública Municipal José Hierro is more than just a building. It’s a place of learning, access, and architectural interest. Its design reflects cultural identity. It offers a space where knowledge and community meet.
