Built of red brick the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche stands proudly. It’s a beacon of history in Berlin-Schöneberg. Its construction spanned from 1892 to 1894. The architect Franz Heinrich Schwechten designed this masterpiece. He also designed the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. This church however is different. Schwechten based its style on Märkisch brick Gothic architecture.

The Apostel-Paulus-Kirche is more than just a pretty building. It witnessed crucial moments in Berlin’s history. Around 30000 people lived in Schöneberg in 1887. They only had the old village church. A new church was needed. In 1890 a competition was held. Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria chose Schwechten’s design. The foundation stone was laid in May 1892. The church was consecrated in December 1894. It could seat 1500 people.

World War II brought devastation. Bombing severely damaged the church. Two-thirds of the roof was destroyed. Parts of the interior were also lost. The exterior was largely restored by 1949. The interior was modernized between 1960 and 1961 by Werner Gabler. Some original features survived. Parts of the original wall and glass paintings remain. Fragments of the original altar also survived this destruction.

The Apostel-Paulus-Kirche is unique. Its stained-glass windows survived the war relatively intact. These windows are exceptionally rare. This is a testament to their quality. There are also impressive wall paintings from the time of construction. The angel choir on the organ loft is one of a kind in Berlin. Its impressive acoustics make it a popular venue. Concerts and radio church services are often held there. Since 2018 the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche has been a place for interreligious dialogue. High-profile concerts discussions and multi-religious services take place there.

The Apostel-Paulus-Kirche stands tall. It’s a beautiful building with a rich history. It’s a vibrant place for worship music and community. This church shows resilience and faith. It is a true gem in the heart of Berlin.
