How about we step back to 1823? St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was just being founded in Philadelphia. This wasn’t just another church. It was a statement.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church stood as a bold example of early Gothic Revival architecture. People in Philadelphia had been craving this style since the 1780s. It offered something different.

This wasn’t the high Gothic style that many would later come to know. It was “Georgian” Gothic. It recalled the architecture of Tudor England from the 15th and 16th centuries.

William Strickland designed St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He was better known for Greek Revival buildings. But he also worked in other picturesque styles. St. Stephen’s is the oldest surviving Gothic Revival building in Philadelphia that he designed.

The first service at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was held on February 27 1823. The church has been modified and renovated over the years. Frank Furness added a transept and vestry room in 1878.

Inside St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, you would have found amazing art. Carl Johann Steinhauser created two sculptures for the church. One was the “Angel of the Resurrection”. It was a memorial to three Burd children. He also created the Burd Baptismal font. Richard Upjohn designed a side chapel to house the children’s monument.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church also featured stained glass windows. These were created by D’Ascenzo Studios and Louis Comfort Tiffany of Tiffany Studios. Henry Holiday designed two stained glass windows. He also created the Venetian glass mosaic of “The Last Supper.” It was placed above the altar.

Over time, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church has had many rectors. James Montgomery was the first one from 1823 to 1834. Others include H. W. Ducachet William Rudder and Samuel D. McConnell.

The church has a rich history of serving the community. In 1958 Rector Alfred W. Price spoke of St. Stephen’s continuing commitment. He wanted it to be a sacred and welcoming place for all.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was designated a historic landmark by the Philadelphia Historical Commission in 1957.

Today St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church continues its mission. It is a place where people can experience God. All are welcome to find care for their spirit here at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
